Application

Phosphine (alternatively phosphane or phosphoric hydrogen) is a gas used for pest control in gas-tight rooms or vessels only.

The application of phosphine will be carried out only by certified companies with a professional knowledge of gassing and by applicators with suitable protective clothing. The gas is kept in certified steel gas cylinders (200 bar).

To guarantee successful disinfestations the space being treated must be carefully wrapped with plastic sheet and sealed. The gas is pumped into the gastight space by injection lance, a valve is used to control the flow.

The gas is distributed rapidly and homogeneously. This kind of application is not dependent on temperature (can be used at low temperatures as well) or humidity.

After the fumigation with FRISIN®, the rooms are ventilated. Phosphine is readily absorbed and metabolised to phosphorous compounds of decreased toxicity, finally resulting in naturally occurring phosphates. Within less than one hour of good ventilation no toxic phosphine is left. This is confirmed by a regularly following measurement of this gas.

Advantages

Phosphine can to be set free from solid carriers as there are aluminiumphosphides or magnesiumphosphides. This process is dependent on the correct amounts of humidity and temperature. This process of evaporation runs bit by bit until the concentration of phosphine becomes effective.

On the contrary to solid carriers FRISIN is a ready-to-use mixture of phosphine and nitrogen.

Benefits at a glance:

  • The active agent phosphine is directly available.
  • The gas is distributed rapidly and homogeniously.
  • Dosage levels are low.
  • Additional phosphine can be added as required.
  • No need of disposing solid carriers after treatment.
  • No need of turning the goods being stored (saves time, simplifies handling, saves energy, reduces wear on conveyors.
  • No insects are spread into area through conveyors or other equipment.
  • Minimizes use of toxic substances.
  • Fumigation can be performed during inclement weather.

Efficacy

The active agent phosphine is directly available by gassing, the gas is distributed rapidly and homogeneously. This kind of application is not dependent on temperature (can be used at low temperatures as well) or humidity.

Phosphine is highly toxic to organisms undergoing oxidative respiration. As a strong reducing agent, it inhibits intracellular oxidative processes by reducing the central iron ion in haemoglobin. Phosphine is used as a fumigant to control insects infesting stored products. It is effective by contact action as a respiratory poison.

After the fumigation with FRISIN®  the rooms are ventilated. Phosphine is readily absorbed and metabolised to phosphorous compounds of decreased toxicity, finally resulting in naturally occurring phosphates. Within less than one hour of good ventilation no toxic phosphine is left. This is confirmed by a regularly following measurement of this gas.

Registration

The gas phosphine is registered in Germany as product FRISIN® under registration number 004511-00/SER. It is actually registered up to November 30th 2012.

This insecticide is used as a plant protection product for the fumigation of stored goods. Holder of FRISIN® is the company S&A Service und Anwendungstechnik GmbH. FRISIN® contains of 1.7 percent by volume phosphine (PH3) and 98.3 percent by volume nitrogen (N2).

FRISIN® may be used for fumigation in other EU countries in case of mutual recognition. A future registration of FRISIN®  within Europe is in preparation. The preliminary acceptance of the active ingredient phosphine within Europe is already given.
